About Mount Lawley
Our Community
Nestled in just 18 square kilometres, the Mount Lawley electorate may be the smallest in Western Australia, but it pulses with a big heart and a bold spirit. First established in 1950 and re-established in 2008 through the redistribution of seats, Mount Lawley is home to over 31,000 people who together create a rich tapestry of cultures, values, and aspirations. Named after Sir Arthur Lawley, a former governor who served WA from 1901 to 1902, the electorate carries a legacy of leadership and community pride.
The electorate spans beloved suburbs including Coolbinia, Dianella, East Perth, Inglewood, Maylands, Menora, Morley, Mount Lawley, and Yokine, touching parts of the City of Bayswater, City of Stirling, and City of Vincent. Every corner of this electorate holds stories of resilience, connection, and progress.
What truly defines Mount Lawley is its extraordinary diversity and inclusivity. The electorate proudly hosts Western Australia's largest Jewish community, and embraces vibrant cultural contributions from Italian, Macedonian, Greek, Chinese, Indian, and Vietnamese residents. This multicultural fabric is not only celebrated, it’s lived and experienced every day in the homes, streets, parks, events and schools that bring this electorate to life.
Education is at the core of Mount Lawley’s identity. It is here that future generations are nurtured, inspired, and empowered. The local government schools, such as Coolbinia, Mount Lawley, Sutherland Dianella, West Morley and Yokine Primary Schools, are more than places of learning; they are neighbourhood hubs where community thrives. Mount Lawley Senior High School stands as a beacon of academic excellence and inclusion, while the North East Metropolitan Language Development Centre and Sir David Brand School offer vital, specialised support that ensures no child is left behind.
Beyond the public system, Mount Lawley is enriched by outstanding independent and faith-based schools, such as Carmel School, Our Lady’s Assumption, Infant Jesus School, Perth College, Banksia Montessori, the Australian Islamic College Dianella, and St Paul’s Primary School. These institutions reflect the electorate’s deeply held belief in choice, quality, and the importance of lifelong learning.
It’s no wonder that 81% of residents report high satisfaction with the area’s liveability. Their satisfaction lies in the simplicity, authenticity and serenity of where they spend their days. From heritage-lined streets to inclusive classrooms, from bustling cafés to serene green spaces, Mount Lawley offers something truly magical, a place where people from all walks of life feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow.
Mount Lawley is more than a place on the map. It’s a rich community full of big dreams and aspirations. Its centre is a shared commitment to shaping a brighter future, together.
